There are only a few movies that you need to watch this year to be well-informed. And thankfully, one of them is Begum Jaan. But before I tell you anything else about what this movie is, let me tell you why it's worth watching. It's about Begum Jaan who was born in poverty and grew up living with her parents and siblings in the walled city of Old Delhi. When she got older, she married into a rich family where she had six children—three sons and three daughters. And when her husband died, she rose to become the head of the family and one of the richest woman in Delhi. If you're bored, if you're hungry for a good story that will keep you glued to the screen, then Begum Jaan is something that not only you should check out, but also should recommend to your friends and family. And what makes it a great movie? Well, there are a lot of things about this movie that make it a classic. First is Rahat Kazmi's brilliantly written story. He's going to be directing Rangoon in 2014 and this movie proves how he's going to be a master at making movies. The cinematography, the music, the acting are all flawless. At one point, Begum Jaan takes her family to a picnic. There are so many people there that the movie gets a little crowded. But not for one moment is it hard to understand what's going on in the frame. And that is what makes it a great piece of art—the ability to tell a story where you're never overwhelmed by too many elements. And Begum Jaan is painfully simple—just like any other story about family drama and revenge. And another thing that sets this movie apart is the performances. It's not just the traditional roles of older woman, father, mother...but it's also Begum Jaan who takes on a range of different characters. She's a mother, she's a sister, she's a wise-older-sister trying to take care of her younger siblings...it's all so wonderfully done that the movie takes on life of its own. And you're left wanting more after watching it. And still another thing that makes this movie work are the actors—both young and old—who have great chemistry together to make you believe what they're saying is real life. If you want to see a classic story told in this year's best movies, then go out and check out Begum Jaan.
